The Director-General of Inquiries and Excavations Department: Ali Shalgham, announced the discovery of an Umayyad mud mosque by the British Museum excavation mission along with a local Iraqi team.
He explained that mosques were among the pioneering buildings in early Islamic period, and we have the chance here at the archaeological site of Tel Kubaiba, located in the Thi Qar Governorate, Al-Rifai District, and north to the city of Nasiriyah to find this mosque, which dates back to the Umayyad Islamic period of approximately the sixtieth year of AH.
He stressed that the discovery is important and significant because the mosque was built of mud and in the middle of the city. It is (8 meters width, and 5 meters length), and has a small mihrab for the imam at the heart of the mosque. It can accommodate approximately 20 people.
Mr. Shalgham said in a statement followed by an Iraqi Palm Agency: The mosque was discovered near the surface of the site, so we found only a few remains of the building due to the erosion factors of besides wind and rain, and it is one of the important discoveries because it dates back to the beginnings of Islam.
.
Mr. Shalgham pointed out that the previous and current excavation missions had found little information in revealing the early Islamic periods.
